Eight-year-old Suraj Bishnoy was one of the many students who attended Satish Deshmukh's workshop at the Bandra Hindu Association on Linking Road this week.
"He is convinced that he wants to become a magician when he grows up," says his mother Rama, a marketing executive.
While Bishnoy is fascinated by her son's ability to recreate scenarios and weave tales around his tricks, Deshmukh points out that it's just another example of how magic can prompt a person to be creative.
"I have used magic for crime detection, personality development and even therapy for patients," says Deshmukh, who gave up a job as a sub-inspector to devote his life to magic.
"My family was aghast, but magic has given me money, fame and satisfaction," says Deshmukh, who has performed the world over.
He says he is the first magician to start workshops in India. "Most magicians don’t like to reveal their tricks, but I want people to know all about magic," says the Navi Mumbai-based magician.
Deshmukh has also helped the Vashi police solve a murder case. "The police had arrested the suspects but they had not confessed. I recognised the accused as a group of tribals and knew that they believed in godmen and babas.
I spoke to them and pretended to be a baba and showed them a few chemically-induced tricks. Within 20 minutes they confessed," says the 37-year-old magician, who charges Rs 5,000 for a five-day workshop.
Currently, Deshmukh is preparing for a show scheduled for June, where he plans to create an illusion of a woman getting pregnant and giving birth, while levitating. This show will be held in Mumbai, followed by another in the US.

A peep into his visiting card denotes his profession as an Entertainer, Magician, and Educator as excellence. One may wonder the nexus between a Magician and an educator but that is more than apt for him as he is the sole magician in the world today who conducts workshops in personality development implementing the ever-mysterious medium of magic. And that is it is called ‘ Magic Workshop’ which is a five days event.
Penchant for magic tricks, no stern family or financial background but an aim to be the best in his field drove Satish to be one of the most accomplished magicians ever.
